Solar cells. Capillary slabs. One sealed unit.

OKACELL embeds monocrystalline photovoltaic cells between the panes of an insulating glass unit and adds OKALUX capillary slabs in the cavity. The cells convert direct solar radiation to electricity. The capillary slabs diffuse the rest of the daylight evenly into the room. The result: sun protection, diffuse daylight, no glare, and a facade that generates power.

The photovoltaic layer

Monocrystalline cells, sealed for life.

Standard 4x4 cell arrays of monocrystalline silicon are laminated between toughened glass panes. The cells generate electricity from direct solar radiation that would otherwise heat the building. Cell coverage is configured per project to balance daylight transmission, solar control, and energy yield.

The capillary layer

OKALUX core, diffuse daylight without glare.

Behind the photovoltaic layer, capillary slabs in the IGU cavity scatter the remaining daylight evenly into the room. This is the same OKALUX capillary core used across the family, proven daylight diffusion, no glare, no hot spots on the floor or ceiling, no operable shading required.

The integration

Energy infrastructure as building envelope.

OKACELL is specified where the building envelope is expected to do more than enclose. LEED, BREEAM, and net-zero projects use OKACELL where the daylighting strategy and the energy-generation strategy can be the same envelope decision. The cells, the capillary slabs, and the IGU are factory-assembled as one sealed unit. No exterior maintenance for the life of the building.

Inside the IGU

Hermetically sealed. Maintenance-free.

The photovoltaic cells and capillary slabs are factory-set inside the sealed IGU cavity. Neither contacts outdoor air, humidity, or UV directly. No painting, coating, or replacement is required for the life of the unit, unlike rooftop or facade-mounted PV systems. Wiring connections at the panel edge integrate with standard low-voltage routing. The factory-sealed cavity functions as the argon or krypton fill chamber for thermal performance.

The interior experience

Daylight, filtered through cells.

Daylight passes between the photovoltaic cells, through the capillary slab, and arrives in the room as soft, evenly-diffused illumination. The Hall of Flags at the Massachusetts State House uses OKACELL in the skylight running the length of the vault. State flags hang in the daylight, and the marble floor takes the sun without glare or hot spots, while the cells overhead generate power for the building.

Where the envelope generates power.

OKACELL is specified where the building envelope is also energy infrastructure: civic buildings with sustainability mandates, educational and institutional projects pursuing LEED or net-zero, BIPV specifications where the architect wants the photovoltaic layer to be visibly architectural rather than appliance-mounted.

01

Civic and institutional

Civic and government buildings with sustainability mandates use OKACELL where the daylighting strategy and energy-generation strategy share the envelope. The Massachusetts State House Hall of Flags integrates OKACELL into a historic skylight: diffuse daylight to the marble floor, electricity from the cells overhead.

02

Sustainability-driven projects

BIPV (building-integrated photovoltaic) specifications use OKACELL where the photovoltaic layer is intended to read as architectural cladding rather than a separate solar array. Peter Ferstl, Stadt Regensburg, integrates OKACELL into the upper facade band over a wood base, the photovoltaic surface visibly part of the building envelope.

Educational and institutional

Schools, universities, and institutional projects with energy targets use OKACELL clerestory glazing to generate power while delivering glare-free daylight to athletic, classroom, and assembly spaces. Direct solar gain is captured as electricity rather than heat.

Engineered for performance.

01
Photovoltaic generation
OKACELL embeds monocrystalline silicon cells between toughened glass panes laminated into a 1-inch IGU. Energy yield is configured per project: cell coverage, panel orientation, and local solar resource. Typical configurations target 100 to 150 W/m² peak power. Consult R. Suare for project-matched yield estimates.
02
Daylight diffusion
Capillary slabs in the IGU cavity, identical to the OKALUX core used across the family, diffuse the daylight that passes between the photovoltaic cells. The result is even illumination without glare, hot spots, or operable shading. Capillary tube finish (T or W) is project-matched to daylight transmission and solar control targets.
03
Thermal and solar control
Reference U-values of .44 (air fill) or .36 with hard coat low-e #4. SHGC ranges from .43 to .25 depending on capillary slab thickness. Higher cell density delivers lower SHGC and stronger solar control; lower cell density delivers higher daylight transmission. Maximum panel size 48 by 157 inches, Jumbo sizes 149 inches and above available. Consult R. Suare for project-matched cell density and Ug build-up.
04
Sealed for life
OKACELL is factory-assembled as one sealed unit. The photovoltaic cells, the capillary slabs, and the IGU never separate. No exterior maintenance for the life of the building, unlike rooftop or facade-mounted PV systems. Wiring connections at the panel edge integrate with standard low-voltage routing.
Construction

Two technologies. One sealed unit.

OKACELL is optimized for vertical façade and skylight applications. Sloped and overhead installations are supported with project-specific framing recommendations. The 1-inch IGU thickness fits standard curtainwall and storefront framing systems. Project-specific values for SHGC, Ug, and energy yield vary with cell density, capillary tube finish (T or W), and IGU build-up. Consult R. Suare for full specification.
